Greek Bronze Coin XRF Alloy Analysis Results
All photographs, data, and descriptions are (C)2006-10 by Daniel Wolf
All rights reserved worldwide. No copying, use, or distribution without written permission.
Results of X-Ray Flourescence Spectroscopy tests on ancient Greek bronze coins, December 4, 2008.
Cu = Copper, Sn = Tin, Pb = Lead, Zn = Zinc, Fe = Iron, Co = Cobalt, Ni = Nickel
FM denotes FerroMagnetism, by degree, from 0 (not attracted) to 3 (strongly attracted to magnet).
Magnet type: Neodymium Iron Boron
Coins with results for only one side were only tested on that side.
Some coins with '-' in the results for certain elements are smaller than the instrument aperture. They were tested slightly differently from the others, and those mostly on one side only. In some cases these modified tests did not provide data on all elements.
A correction was made to eliminate spurious results and corrected results are shown.
Failure to total 100% in may be due to presence of other trace elements to be reported later.
Photos not shown will be added shortly.
Thanks to the generous supporters of The PtolemAE Project.

Ptolemy Coin GAE512
Ptolemy II Philadelphos Drachm - Alexandria Mint - 285/246BC
AE 40.9-41.6mm : 62.3gm : 11h
OBV - Zeus Ammon, facing right
REV - Twin eagles standing on thunderbolts facing left, THETA between left eagle legs, ME monogram between right eagle legs. BASILEOS on right, PTOLEMAIOY on left. Svoronos identifies the 'two eagles' type as struck after the death of Arsinoe.
REF - Svoronos 464
NOTE - The same unusual double/split control combination of THETA and ME is found on a bronze single-eagle coin type of about 35gm (hemidrachm) and also on some tetradrachms. This control links to a silver type typical of Ptolemy II issues and is one reason to be confident that these bronzes are also issues of Ptolemy II, and that also helps date the time period of all the other two-eagle large coins and their related smaller denominations.
